Green Tier Task Force 2024 Wrap Up
Village of Egg Harbor’s Green Tier Taskforce Looks Back on a Milestone Year and gears up for an even bigger 2025!
The Village of Egg Harbor’s Green Tier Taskforce is celebrating a year of significant achievements in sustainability and community engagement. Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team, supportive local businesses, and engaged residents, 2024 marked a year of impactful environmental initiatives that further positioned Egg Harbor as a leader in sustainable practices.
Among the highlights of the past year:
USDA Compost & Food Waste Reduction Grant: The Taskforce successfully carried out its second year of grant work, receiving a no-cost extension to continue efforts through May 2026. The program expanded to include six businesses participating in compost pick-up, collecting a record 250 five-gallon buckets—surpassing the 145 buckets collected the previous year. Additionally, a resident food scrap drop-off program was launched, registering ten households, and a collaboration with the Climate Change Coalition of Door County led to diverting 40 buckets of food waste at the Jacksonport
Farmers Market.
Chemical-Free Initiative: The Taskforce closed out its third year of reduced glyphosate use in the orchard at Eames Cherry View Park. Volunteers documented orchard conditions through weekly photos and established a streamlined process to notify the public about spraying events. The village also led its seventh annual No Mow May program, encouraging residents and businesses to delay mowing to support pollinators.
Plastic-Free Initiative: Green Tier expanded its efforts to eliminate single-use plastics, sponsoring water stations at the Fourth of July Parade and Pumpkin Patch Festivals, which dispensed over 110 gallons of water in total. The Taskforce also raised funds for and debuted reusable canvas bags, encouraging businesses and shoppers to reduce plastic bag use.
Community Engagement: Egg Harbor strengthened its role as a regional sustainability leader by hosting two Green Tier Summits, bringing together Door County communities to share resources and ideas. The Taskforce also hosted its 9th annual “Every Day is Earth Day” event at the Kress Pavilion, continued outreach at the Fourth of July Parade and Pumpkin Patch, and grew its volunteer base with two new members.
Looking Ahead: Building on 2024’s success, the Green Tier Taskforce is committed to furthering its initiatives in the coming year. Planned efforts include:
